Basketball Bundesliga club ratiopharm Ulm has promoted former national player Anton Gavel to head coach. The 37-year-old will be signed on a two-year contract, succeeding Jaka Lakovic, the club announced on Saturday.
Lakovic left Ulm after three years for top Spanish club CB Gran Canaria. Gavel previously trained Ulm’s farm team, the OrangeAcademy, in the third-rate ProB.
“Anton has been with us at the club for three years now,” said Ulm’s sporting director Thorsten Leibenath, he was the “first point of contact”: “Like Jaka, Anton is a former player who played at the highest level and collected titles. Especially in relation to that in terms of credibility and imparting experience, this is an exceptionally big plus.”
The former point guard Gavel appeared internationally for Slovakia and also for Germany, in the Bundesliga he played for Brose Bamberg and Bayern Munich for many years. In 2019 he began his coaching career at the OrangeAcademy, which he most recently led to the ProB play-off semi-finals.
