Rare: banana tree of almost six meters in backyard Voorburg | Inland

The two Voorburgers know for sure: it is mainly due to global warming and the last beautiful summers that the tropical tree has grown ‘to the sky’ in their shared front gardens. But there is more why the Voorburg banana tree thrives so well.

Nutrition

„In winter we have always packed it well with garden waste and reed mats. And all the other greenery in the garden has been removed to give the tree as much nourishment as possible,” say the owners.

To imitate the original living climate even better, ‘a lot of water and a lot of spraying’ are also done.

To the delight of the neighbors, all love for the tree has also been reciprocated for the first time. “We have bananas! In three places, among the purple flowers”, they say with great enthusiasm.

Suriname

They don’t know yet whether the fruits are edible. De Voorburgers: “In any case, it attracts a lot of attention. Several times a day people are taking pictures. A Surinamese man could not believe his eyes and only knew this from his native country.”

According to the Natural Delfland association, tropical trees thrive better with today’s temperatures.

“But this banana tree is really an exception,” says chairman Geert van Poelgeest of the Natural Delfland Association. “Most don’t get higher than a few meters.”
