Big Pokey, a central figure in the local Houston rap scene, died Sunday (June 18) at the age of 45. This was confirmed by Justice of the Peace Tom Gillam and the musician’s press secretary. Big Pokey, real name Milton Powell, collapsed on stage during his performance on Saturday night, June 17, 2023.

While details of his death are still few, a video posted to social media shows the rapper appearing to pass out, mic in hand, and fall on his back during his performance. Several people then rushed to his aid, including a police officer. The cause of death is not yet known as an autopsy is pending.

One of the first people to pay tribute to Big Pokey publicly was Houston hip hopper Bun B. He posted a photo with the late rapper on Sunday morning and wrote, “I wasn’t ready for this. One of the most talented artists in town. A reserved, unassuming mountain from a man who moved with honor and respect. He was easy to love and hard to hate. He pulled up, did what he had to do, and went home. He was one of the pillars of our city. If a heart of gold was a man. An iconic member of the SUK. There will never be another and we will miss him dearly. We love and honor you, sensei. rest in heaven”.

Big Pokey was best known for his collaborations with Houston producer and DJ Screw in the early ’90s. His debut studio album HARDEST PIT IN THE LITTER in 1999 featured many other Houston rap icons including Lil Keke, C-Note, Lil’ O and the late H-Town rappers Big Moe and Big Hawk.
