Basketball Bundesliga club Hamburg Towers has found a successor for the departed head coach Pedro Calles. The Austrian Raoul Korner, who has been with league rivals medi Bayreuth for the past six years, has been given a two-year contract on the Elbe.
“The location has enormous potential and I would like to do my part to develop it fully,” Korner (48) is quoted as saying in the Towers announcement: “I want to help the organization be able to be successful in the long term, and I expect one rocky but very exciting way to get there.”
Calles (39) had not extended his expiring contract in Hamburg, the Spaniard will be on the sidelines at league rivals EWE Baskets Oldenburg next season. Korner had also vacated his chair in Bayreuth at his own request.
The Towers had reached the play-offs in seventh place in the main round, and in the quarter-finals they came up against Telekom Baskets Bonn.
