Coach Claudio Ranieri has led the Italian second division soccer team Cagliari Calcio back to Serie A after a year’s absence.
In the duel for promotion, the team from the island of Sardinia won the second leg at SSC Bari with a goal in added time 1-0 (0-0). The first leg ended 1-1.
Leonardo Pavoletti (90+4) redeemed the fans and Ranieri, who had returned to the club just before Christmas. The experienced coach had already taken over Cagliari in 1988 and at that time led it directly from Serie C1 to Serie A. The 71-year-old celebrated his greatest success in 2016 when he won the sensational English Premier League championship with Leicester City.
