“Not satisfied” with interim period
The Manchester United side have given caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick a win in his last appearance in front of a home crowd. Afterwards, the German coach, who will take over as Austria’s national coach after the season, was dissatisfied with what the “Red Devils” had achieved. Rangnick, who will remain with the record champions as an advisor, also gave an outlook on upcoming transfer activities.
On Monday evening, Man United beat newly promoted FC Brentford 3-0 (1-0) at Old Trafford. In the Premier League table, Rangnick’s team consolidated sixth place with a six-point lead over West Ham United, who, however, played a game in hand. Because Tottenham and Arsenal also have two games more than United in front of their chests, qualification for the desired Champions League hardly seems achievable.
“In the end I’m not satisfied with the results, especially in the last four or five weeks,” Rangnick quarreled after the game (quoted via “BBC”) with the end of his interim period, after which he was replaced by Ajax Amsterdam’s previous coach Erik ten Hag is inherited. Speaking about his overall time as United manager, Rangnick said: “I’m not entirely satisfied with these six months. I would have expected us to qualify for the Champions League. That was the goal we had.” However, the former Leipzig maker also summed up that United had to struggle with many injuries and emphasized: “Other teams brought players in the transfer window.”
Rangnick on Manchester United’s transfer plans: “Some players will leave”
For the near future, about which the future United advisor has not yet spoken to successor ten Hag, Rangnick does not expect a protracted upheaval: “Other clubs only needed two or three transfer phases to get it done, but from now on we have to get quality players who really help raise the level. If that happens then I think it shouldn’t take too long (to the United squad with tenures).
Rangnick stated: “It’s obvious that some players will leave and there is a need for quality players. I truly believe that if everyone works together, we can bring Manchester United back to where we belong.”
