Ralf Seuntjens (33) looks to the future again: ‘That little one still wants to see me play football, so that’s the goal’ | Dutch football

Ralf Seuntjens received a wonderful welcome in the Rat Verlegh Stadium on Friday evening from the supporters of his old clubs NAC and De Graafschap, after it became clear two weeks ago that the 33-year-old attacker from Breda is free of lymphoma. His son Nolan (4) now hopes that his father will one day be a professional football player, but Seuntjens has not yet made any promises. “I can look to the future again and I’m still here for him, that’s the most important thing.”

“The tribute was really beautiful. That gave me a lump in my throat. That those clubs and supporters do that together, that’s great. For me it was immensely honorable. A wonderful evening, of which I have many great memories,” said the former striker of RBC, FC Den Bosch, Telstar, VVV-Venlo, De Graafschap and NAC after the match at ESPN, after NAC was too strong 2-0. was for De Graafschap, which has to do without trainer Adrie Poldervaart for the time being.

While the trainer of De Graafschap hopes for a good recovery in the hospital, Seuntjens can look to the future again after eight exciting and grueling months. In May last year it was announced that a tumor had been found in Seuntjens, one and a half months after his transfer from NAC to Japan. He then returned to the Netherlands for his treatment, where he finally received good news at the end of January.

Before the match, Seuntjes walked a lap of honor through the Rat Verlegh Stadium with his son Nolan (4) in his arms. He hopes to see his father play football again soon. Seuntjens has a contract until January 2024 with FC Imabari in Japan, but does not dare to make any promises to his son yet. “I don’t make promises if I’m not sure I’m going to make it. I promised him I would survive this. Luckily that worked out. That is the most important thing and that is very nice.”

Seuntjens looked back at ESPN on the past few months. ,,I also had two children, but I have to say that I was even more euphoric when I recently received the good news that I was clean. It was such a huge relief, very beautiful.”

“I don’t know what my future will look like. I am now training again with my personal trainer here in Breda. We’re going to see if I’m still fit. That will have to show in the coming months. Then I hope to go back to Japan, because my little one still wants to see me play football. That’s the goal and for him I really want to do it, but I haven’t promised him anything yet. The first few workouts are really hard for me, I must say. The whole recovery system is not yet in order, but I try to do as much as possible every day. That intrinsic motivation couldn’t be greater, because I’m doing it for him.”
