In the four largest Belgian cities (Antwerp, Ghent, Brussels and Charleroi), air quality will have improved significantly again in 2023. For the first time, average nitrogen dioxide emissions will fall below the new directive that the European Union wants to introduce by 2030. This is evident from preliminary figures from the Interregional Cell for the Environment (Ircel). The number of exceedances for particulate matter was also historically low. Belgium is well on its way to achieving the recommended value of the World Health Organization (WHO).
