Four times silver, one bronze – on the second day of the European Games in Kraków, the German team won the first medals.
The canoeists cheered twice in the sprint over 500 meters: Felix Frank and Martin Hiller (both Potsdam) only had to admit defeat to the Ukraine in the men’s kayak doubles, in the women’s kayak fours only Poland was faster.
For the European Games, the quartet Paulina Paszek (Hannover), Jule Hake (Lünen), Katinka Hofmann (Karlsruhe) and Lena Röhlings (Berlin) were newly formed – with success. “It’s an unbelievable feeling,” said batting woman Paszek: “We drove together for three, maybe four weeks. The fact that things are going so well now gives us all a lot of self-confidence.”
Bronze went to Serbia for men and Denmark for women.
It was also enough for the podium in the shooters and in BMX: double European champion Robin Walter won silver with the air pistol, just like Kim Lea Müller in BMX freestyle. The woman from Oldenburg had already won silver at the European Championships, which took place in Munich last year as a competition event for the European Games.
As in Munich, Müller was only beaten by the Czech Iveta Miculycova in Kraków – and finished the freestyle competition like last year ahead of the third-placed Frenchman Laury Perez.
Meanwhile, the German beach handball players around flag bearer Isabel Kattner were happy about bronze. The world champions, who only successfully defended their European Championship title at the end of May, defeated Norway 2-0 in the small final. Kattner and Co. had previously failed at Denmark (0:2), who are fighting for gold against Spain in the non-Olympic sport in the evening.
