The Swedish taxman ordered Helminen to pay nearly four million kroner in back taxes in 1997. A few years later, the Swedish government court determined the sum of the unpaid taxes and their interest from the Malmö periods to be 600,000 euros.
Helminen had been Malmö’s highly paid superstar.
– The salary was paid through complicated arrangements, summarizes the writer Salo.
– No tax was paid on part of the salary.
Helminen paid his tax debts with loan money and by selling his house to his wife. According to the book, support was offered “with certain arrangements”. Kimi Raikkonenwho was active in Tampere hockey circles at that time.
– Kimi was a really big help to me for a few years. He helped me in a significant way financially, says Helminen in the book.
– I later took out a loan from the bank and paid him back. I am really grateful for the help I received from Kim. He is a great man and a good friend.
