Raimo Helminen played seven seasons in Malmö in his long career. Fresh from the oven Crispy– biography reveals a special injury episode from the years in Sweden.
Helminen was celebrating the team’s Slovakian defender Robert Svehlan toes.
– We went to Svehla’s home, where the owner was already drinking vodka raw at the kitchen table, Helminen explains in the book.
– He poured a schnapps glass full and drank it all at once, in the style of the Eastern Bloc. The rest of us were drinking.
The party continued into the night in Malmö, but Svehla’s health required a faster return home than the others. Helminen went to escort and tame his teammate.
– The only thing that helped was to start dragging the guy home. I had taken a couple of bad things, but I was in good shape, says Helminen.
– When we got to the courtyard, Svehla staggered and I was also losing my balance. I stepped on the edge of the yard paving and my foot buckled. We flew to the rosebush.
The next day, Helminen told his teammates about the fall at night. The information ended up in the afternoon newspapers.
To top it all off, a fracture was found in Helminen’s foot table that required a cast and sick leave. He had to make a not-so-nice phone call For Hannu Jortikfor the team’s stern-faced coach.
– Do you want to hear the truth, how it happened? Helminen carefully inquired according to the book.
Jortikka was already excited about the nightly events after reading the afternoon papers.
Helminen returned to the basket in the middle of the Västerås quarter-final series. Malmö’s season ended with a loss to HV71 in the semi-finals.
Raipe (Docendo) written by Tapani Salo will be published on September 13.
