Raid at squatted Youth Synagogue in Groningen: 24-year-old Arnhemmer arrested

The police forcibly entered the squatted youth synagogue in Folkingedwarsstraat on Thursday evening. One person was arrested.

A local resident reports that around a quarter past five, at the end of Thursday afternoon, three or four police vans drove into the street. “About ten police officers, some of them wearing masks and without uniforms, broke down the door. In any case, I saw a squatter arrested.”

Therefore

The police say that a 24-year-old man from Arnhem has been arrested. The Arnhemmer is suspected of distributing personal data of an agent online.

The police discovered that various social media pages mentioned the name, photo and other personal information of a senior police officer from the Northern Netherlands. “Sharing this type of data is a huge invasion of the officer’s privacy. Not only does so-called ‘doxing’ influence the feeling of safety, it also has a major impact on family members and the immediate environment of victims.”

The officer then filed a report and the police started an investigation, both digital and tactical. “Ultimately this led to the arrest of the 24-year-old man. The man has been interrogated about his involvement in distributing the data online and is currently suspected of insult and defamation. After the interrogation he was released again. He remains a suspect in the investigation.”

The old youth synagogue was squatted in October. The cracking caused quite a stir. For example, the squatters organized an information meeting about Palestine in the building that is important to the Jewish community. In addition, the squatters were spotted in incidents such as the attack on Baudet and the assault on a soot sweeper Piet orchestra.

Doxing becomes a punishable offense

Sharing personal data of another person with the intention of intimidating that person, so-called doxing, will become a punishable offense from January 1, 2024. Personal data is all data that can be used to identify a person, such as addresses, but also photos.
