Rai Vloet gets 2.5 years in prison for accident in which toddler died

Professional footballer Rai Vloet (27) from Schijndel has to go to jail for 2.5 years for a fatal accident in November 2021. In this accident on the highway near Hoofddorp, 4-year-old Gio Roos was killed. Because Vloet was heavily under the influence of alcohol, he was also banned from driving for four years.

The prison sentence imposed by the court is lower than the requirement of the Public Prosecution Service. The public prosecutor demanded 3.5 years in prison two weeks ago.

Vloet drove 203 kilometers per hour just before the accident, according to data from his own car. He rode on the back of a family’s car from Zoetermeer. The 4-year-old boy died. The parents of the fatal victim and their 1-year-old daughter were injured.

“I had two or three glasses of liquor,” Vloet said during the hearing. “Before the accident, I was at a party in Amsterdam, which ended early. We were supposed to sleep in a hotel in Amsterdam, but made a new plan and went to Rotterdam. Without thinking, I started driving. After the tunnel, we went into the trajectory control and I was busy setting the cruise control properly at 130.”

Vloet, 27, says he did not see the accident coming. “I didn’t see it, I only remember the blow. I can’t remember many things. I’m constantly trying to find more information, but it doesn’t come up.” Research showed that Vloet had more than twice as much alcohol in his blood (515 ugl). 220 ugl is the maximum.

The former player of PSV, NAC Breda, Excelsior and Heracles Almelo, among others, was in the car with a friend. Vloet’s friend initially took the blame by posing as the driver to the police. When the footballer later became aware of the tragic consequences, he decided to tell the truth.

“The blow must have been enormous,” the prosecutor said during the hearing. “The family’s car came to a stop 200 meters away. The rear was completely crushed.”

At the end of March 2022, Vloet’s ongoing contract with Heracles was terminated until mid-2023. Supporters of the club from Almelo whistled at their former star player after the fatal collision and he continued his career in Kazakhstan with Astana FK. In September 2022, Vloet went to the Russian FK Ural, which plays in the Premjer-Liga.
