Things are only going further downhill for Radio 10 since the duo Gordon and Froukje de Both hold sway there during the morning rush hour. “Will they make it to Christmas?” asks Patrick Kicken.
Just before Gordon and Froukje de Both started as morning DJs, Radio 10 was the sixth radio station in the Netherlands with a market share of 7.0 percent. The decline soon started and now, about a month and a half later, John de Mol’s golden-oldies channel is the tenth (!) channel in the Netherlands with only 4.9 percent market share.
Legendarily low
Patrick Kicken, the most important radio columnist in our country, initially had a lot of confidence in this duo. He says: “I have resisted it for a long time and I actually still want to give him the benefit of the doubt, but the weekly listening figures don’t lie: Talpa’s Radio 10 continues to decline to a legendary low listening figure of 4.9 percent.”
He continues Speaking tube: “The other DPG oldies station, JOE, already overtook 10 and now it is Radio Veronica’s turn. Both have stronger morning shows than those of Gordon & Froukje, namely Coen & Sander and Gerard Ekdom.”
In your face
What does Patrick think is the big problem? That Gordon and Froukje were too ‘in your face’ for the Radio 10 audience. According to him, they had more low key have to start. “A lot of music in the first few weeks, let listeners get used to it slowly.”
He continues: “Don’t impose yourself on them, especially if you are Gordon and have already suffered some damage to your image over the years. In that respect, they would have been better off launching this duo first with a weekend show and as substitutes in the morning, and then carefully building their own morning show.”
No favor factor
Gordon also lacks the goodwill factor, according to Patrick. Although, according to him, their show is not that bad, ‘the most important thing is whether the listener wants to listen to you’. “In that respect, Gordon really has to win soul by soul, if necessary by visiting people’s homes with Christmas packages, if he wants to make it to Christmas at Radio 10.”
It would be painful if Goor and Froukje did not make it to Christmas, because they have signed for at least a year. What does Patrick think is needed to turn the tide? A coach. “If necessary, persuade Corné Klijn to talk things over, it could be the salvation for a combination that was quite successful on paper: Gordon and Froukje.”
