Due to the pandemic, Elizabeth decided to leave for Windsor Castle, about 20 kilometers west of London. The Queen will now live and work there permanently.
Queen Elizabeth is moving
Buckingham Palace was the Queen’s official headquarters and residence, but Elizabeth had always preferred Windsor. That is also where Prince Philip, Elizabeth’s husband, died in April 2021.
Longest lasting frost
The decision to officially leave Buckingham Palace comes just months before Elizabeth’s anniversary celebrations. She became Queen of the United Kingdom 70 years ago and plans to do so until her death.
She is now the longest-serving monarch in British history. In June, festivities are planned to celebrate its platinum anniversary.
King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla are expected to be the next residents of Buckingham Palace. But only after Elizabeth’s death.
