Here the hysterical dance routines of the teenie TikTok stars and the kids sitting their butts flat in virtual school classes at home, there vaccine refusers, climate change deniers, conspiracy theorists: to a stubborn drum beat, a growling fuzz guitar, a psychedelic organ Groove and a cute alt-rock chorus, Sam Coomes and Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss venture to the places where the nervous-anxious society threatens to break apart, watch the unstoppable decline while eating blackberry pie and drinking coffee.

The album “Breaking The Balls Of History” and songs like “Doomscrollers” are the answer of the somewhat forgotten indie rock institution Quasi to the confusion of the Corona age. The pandemic has seen Coomes and Weiss spend most of their time in a tiny exercise room in a Portland basement, and ten years after “Mole City” the duo is now back with a great album that analyzes the present in a clever, funny, wild, mangy and defiant manner, addicted to melody and harmony and yet bulky, brittle and looking very darkly into the future.
Between the countenance rhyme “Last Long Laugh”, decorated with a malicious guitar, which mocks death with a bitter laugh at the opening of the work, to “The Losers Win”, an atheistic hymn that ends the record, there are lots of small and big ones grumpy treasures. For example, behind the bulky packaging of “Queen Of Ears” lurks a crazy smash hit.
“Shitty Is Pretty” sounds like a perverted children’s song that could also be a meta-criticism of the music business. “Riots & Jokes” comes along with a whining organ like a wild Elvis Costello song from the 80s. “Rotten Wrock” is a nasty psychobilly boogie. And on the sarcastic ballad “Gravity,” Quasi make you realize that whatever you do, in the end, gravity doesn’t matter. Being in a bad mood for advanced learners.
