RB Leipzig created a sensation in the quarter-finals of the women’s DFB Cup. The second division team outclassed SGS Essen from the Bundesliga 6-1 (4-0) on Tuesday (February 28th, 2023).
The Saxons are the only lower-class club to play in the semi-finals. Late on Tuesday evening, Bayern Munich also made it into the semi-finals perfectly. The runners-up won 2-0 (0-0) at TSG Hoffenheim.
Wolfsburg clearly wins
Meanwhile, the VfL Wolfsburg footballers have extended their great DFB Cup series and are on course for the final triumph for the ninth year in a row. The double winners prevailed 4-0 (2-0) against first division rivals 1. FC Köln, Wolfsburg thus winning their 43rd cup game in a row.
In front of a good 3,500 fans in the Viktoria Köln stadium, the Wolfsburg team clearly dominated the game against FC from the start. Ewa Pajor (24th) and the German internationals Svenja Huth (42nd), Marina Hegering (66th) and Jule Brand (88th) scored for the German champions.
Also Freiburg a round further
SC Freiburg is also in the semifinals. Freiburg hardly had any problems with a 4-0 (2-0) win at second division Carl Zeiss Jena. Munich had more work to do in Hoffenheim, but substitute Maximiliane Rall (68th) and Klara Bühl (77th) still ensured the deserved favorite win.
The semifinals will be drawn next Sunday. Record national player Lothar Matthäus then draws the pairings, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf takes over the task of drawing manager. The semi-finals will take place from April 15th to 17th, the final in Cologne’s Bundesliga stadium will take place on May 18th.
