Qualifying tournament in Brazil: volleyball players close to Olympic ticket

As of: October 7th, 2023 8:10 a.m

Fifth game, fifth victory: The German volleyball players also defeated the Czech Republic at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Rio de Janeiro and are therefore close to achieving their dream goal.

National coach Michal Winiarski’s team won 3-0 (25:23, 25:18, 25:17) against the Czech Republic. A win from the remaining two games would guarantee the team one of the two tickets to Paris 2024. “We played our thing down cleverly, there’s still something left in the tank”said outside attacker Ruben Schott after the “exhausting” fifth appearance in seven days, “But we’re playing very well and it’s a lot of fun. We have a really positive atmosphere on the field and we really heat each other up.”

Germany still needs a win

The selection of the German Volleyball Association (DVV) leads the table of eight group A with 15 points ahead of Italy (12) and Brazil (10). The top two teams in the tournament make it to the Summer Games. The German team can make everything clear against the winless bottom team Qatar on Sunday night (1.30 a.m.). It would be the first Olympic qualification for a selection of the German Volleyball Association since London 2012. Germany entered the tournament as an outsider, but gained an excellent starting position with two surprising victories against world champions Italy and hosts Brazil.

Grozer once again the top scorer

Against the Czechs, who had previously forced hosts Brazil into a tiebreak, Germany only had to overcome tricky situations in the first set and were clearly the better team afterwards. Ultimately, Tobias Krick converted the second match point to secure victory. The German top scorer was again Georg Grozer with 14 points.
