Early end for Hamilton
For record world champion Lewis Hamilton, it was a complete surprise that the knockout elimination was over in the first round. The 37-year-old Briton did not make it past 16th place in the Mercedes. “I’m so sorry guys” Hamilton radioed into the pits. Nico Hülkenberg, who again replaced the sick Sebastian Vettel at Aston Martin, finished 18th.
All clear after Schumacher accident – still no start
Mick Schumacher, on the other hand, had made it into the second round in the Haas, where he crashed sideways into the barriers at high speed. The car belonging to the son of record world champion Michael Schumacher was thrown across the track and then came to a standstill, badly damaged.
Anxious minutes followed before the Haas racing team carefully gave the all-clear. The 23-year-old is doing well physically, said a spokesman for the Haas team. A few minutes later, team boss Günther Steiner told the broadcaster “Sky”: “Mick is fully conscious, he spoke to his mother. He has no external injuries. Now he’s doing a safety check in the hospital. Mick is fine, that’s the most important thing.”
