The Ukrainian qualifier Dajana Jastremska continues to cause a sensation at the Australian Open and is in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time.
The 23-year-old defeated two-time tournament winner Wiktoria Asarenka from Belarus 7:6 (8:6), 6:4 in Melbourne on Monday and celebrated the greatest success of her career.
After just over two hours of play, the 93rd in the world rankings used her first match point to win. “I think my heart is about to jump out of my chest. I’m a fighter, that’s why I won this match,” Jastremska said.
In the round of the last eight, Jastremska will face the 19-year-old Czech Linda Noskova, who sensationally eliminated world number one Iga Swiatek in the third round. On Monday, Noskova benefited from the injury-related retirement of her Ukrainian opponent Elina Svitolina when the score was 3-0 in the first set.
