In the duel between two prominent coaches, Robin van Persie achieved partial success against José Mourinho and Fenerbahce Istanbul with Feyenoord Rotterdam. Feyenoord won the first leg in the 3rd qualification round for the Champions League on Wednesday with 2: 1 (1-0) and now has a good starting point for the second leg on August 12th in Istanbul (7 p.m.).

In Rotterdam, nothing happened after an own goal of Mert Müldür (19th). In the final phase, Sofyan Amrabat (86th) achieved the deserved compensation for Fenerbahce, but Anis Hadj Moussa (90.+1) replied for Feyenoord.

Müldür fells out unsustainable

Rotterdam had only ended the past Champions League season in the round of 16 and was eliminated there against the later finalist Inter Milan. Previously there had been victories against Bayern Munich (3-0) and AC Milan. In the Dutch league, the Van-Persie team behind Eindhoven and Amsterdam only rank third, so that the renewed qualification for the Champions League still has to work out.

Against Fenerbahce, Feyenoord of Van Persie’s 42nd birthday took the lead with a good dose of luck. Quinten Timber wanted to bring the ball flat in front of the goal in the trap, but the cross bounced off from Müldür’s leg and struck in the short corner unsustainably. However, the goal was well deserved, the hosts were the dominant team over long distances in the first half – even if they rarely came dangerously in front of the goal.

Wellenreuther parried strongly

The completely newly formed defensive series of the Dutch with left -back Jordan Bos and the central defenders Tsuyoshi Watanabe and Anel Ahmedhocic only came into trouble in the 41st minute before the break. After a rebound, Fenerbahces Archie Brown was suddenly free in front of Timon Wellereuther, but the German goalkeeper parried heavily with his foot. A subsequent header from Irfan Can Kahveci was revoked due to a short away position.

In the added time of the first half, Feyenoords Sam Stejn still fled a free kick on the Tordach. The access of Twente Enschede was bore the captain’s bandage, which had heard Timber last season.

Dzeko and Tadic not yet replaced

After the break, Fenerbahce came into play better, but remained too harmless in the penalty area. In Edin Dzeko and Dusan Tadic, the club had prominent departures in the storm center. Despite the loan of Al Nassrs Jhon Duran, Fenerbahce is looking for another attacker. In the local league, Galatasaray threatens to pull away with the millions of purchases from Leroy Sané and Victor Osimhen, who had previously been borrowed.

Further income from the Champions League would be all the more important, but Feyenoord proved to be hard nut. Mourinho brought Duran and Nelson Semedo (from Wolverhampton) in the course of the second half, and also the former Frankfurter Cenk Tosun in the final phase.

There was the reward for the effort in the 86th minute when Amrabat made a rebound under the crossbar. A draw would have been a fair result, but Hadj Moussa, with his beautiful header, made the stadium of de Kuip cook after a cross from the half field.

Before the group phase, playoffs

The winner of the duel is not yet qualified for the lucrative group phase of the Champions League, but still has to go to the playoffs. The opponent is there either OGC Nice or Benfica Lisbon. The loser receives a place in the Europa League.
