Qatar critic ruffles FC Bayern for sponsorship deal

FC Bayern Munich is once again exposed to sharp criticism after the club has announced a new sponsorship deal with the Emirates airline. The club member Michael Ott in particular expressed concerns about cooperation with the state company from Dubai, a country that is known for human rights violations on social media.
In his criticism on the platform X, Ott wrote: “Mr. Diederich, the state company of a country that suppresses its population and who is accused of supporting war crimes and violations of international law in Sudan, does not make an ideally fits into the partner family of our club! ‘” He also accused the club responsible for money.
Ott’s comment referred to the statements of Michael Diederich, the deputy chairman of FC Bayern, who praised Emirates as a new platinum partner in a press release. Ott had already protested the possible deal at the end of July. “With Emirates, FC Bayern continues exactly where the Qatar’s Sin ended. The responsible persons did not learn anything,” he wrote at the time at X. “Without moral inhibitions, the money is blindly run after the money and the good reputation of our club has to serve. Shake yourself!”
Ott had previously emerged as a lot of critics of FC Bayern and was largely involved in the discussion about the controversial partnership with Qatar Airways, which ended in 2023. Critics accuse the United Arab Emirates of suppressing their population and restricting basic human rights. There, for example, homosexuality is considered a crime and punished with prison terms.
FC Bayern presented the airline Emirates from Dubai as a new premium partner on Wednesday. A contract was decided with the company by the end of the 2031/32 season, it said in a club announcement. The cooperation will include gang advertising in the Allianz Arena, according to “Sport Bild” the deal brings Bavaria five million euros a year. Emirates is already promoting top European clubs such as Real Madrid, FC Arsenal, AC Milan or Benfica Lisbon.
