As of: September 9, 2023 6:26 p.m

Belgium took the lead in its group with a difficult victory in Azerbaijan and has the best prospects of taking part in the 2024 European Football Championship in Germany.

The 5th matchday of the European Championship qualification ends with the games on Sunday (September 9th, 2023).

Group F: Belgium is heading towards safe qualification

The Belgian national football team, coached by Domenico Tedesco, remains on course for the European Championships. The Red Devils had a lot of trouble in the qualifying game against Azerbaijan in Baku, but won 1-0 (1-0) and moved to the top of Group F. With ten points after four games, Belgium is now level with Austria. Yannick Carrasco (38th) was lucky to score for the guests when he deflected a shot from Johan Bakayoko into the goal. For Belgium, which had to do without the injured top star Kevin De Bruyne, Wolfsburg’s Koen Casteels was in goal, and Leipzig’s Lois Openda came on as a substitute (84′).

Sweden is third, but only has three points after three games. The team has the chance to reduce the deficit with a win in Estonia in the evening.

England and Italy are still in action in the evening

There are more games coming up on Saturday evening. Vice European champions England are playing in Ukraine, defending champions Italy are playing in North Macedonia.

6th matchday from Sunday to Tuesday

The group winners and runners-up from each of the ten qualifying groups are certain to take part in the European Championship – this is how 20 of the 24 participating teams will be determined. In addition, there is the automatically qualified host Germany and three teams from the playoffs, which will be created based on the results of the Nations League and will take place in March 2024. The 6th match day is scheduled from Sunday to Tuesday.
