Zurich (dpa) – The World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina, which was canceled at the beginning of September 2021 after a corona scandal, will definitely be repeated.
The appeals committee of the world football association FIFA rejected the complaints of both countries and thus confirmed the decision made by the disciplinary committee in mid-February. This was announced by FIFA.
“After examining the submissions of both parties and considering all the circumstances of the case, the FIFA Appeals Committee confirmed the replay of the match and the fine of CHF 50,000 each imposed on the two associations for abandoning the match,” it said the message.
Brazil and Argentina already qualified
The fine imposed on the Brazilian association CBF for breaches of order and safety is reduced to 250,000 Swiss francs; the fine imposed on the Argentine association AFA for similar breaches of duty is reduced to 100,000 Swiss francs.
The game was initially interrupted after a few minutes on September 5, 2021 in São Paulo and then stopped. At that time, officials from the Anvisa health authority had entered the field to take three Argentinian players off for alleged violations of corona regulations. As a result, FIFA initiated disciplinary proceedings against both national associations. Both CBF and AFA appealed this decision.
Brazil and Argentina have already qualified for the World Cup in Qatar from November 21st to December 18th.
