Qatar World Cup: Iran-USA, from the Coup d’etat of ’53 to the white roses of Lyon

In Qatar, Iranians and Americans were drawn in the same group as in France ’98. Two historically enemy countries that sport has been able to bring together more than once

In Tehran they have already renamed it “Group Coup 53”, the group of the Coup d’état of 1953, orchestrated by the United States and Great Britain that removed Mohammad Mossadeq, the first (and last …) democratically elected Prime Minister in Iran. In Qatar at the World Cup in November, the three nations will face each other to look for a place in the round of 16. The match between the USA and the Islamic Republic will be the most loaded with extra-sporting meanings, and also the 2-1 revenge with which the Persians in Lyon in 1998 defeated their usual rivals, the Great Satan.
