Hannover 96 won the Niedersachsensenderby against Eintracht Braunschweig 2-0 (2-0). Coach Stefan Leitl’s team was clearly superior in the duel with the bottom of the table and improved to third place in the 2nd Bundesliga thanks to their success.
Fabian Kunze (12th) and Marcel Halstenberg (42nd, penalty kick) ensured the well-deserved success of the “Reds” with their goals on Sunday afternoon, who once again underlined their promotion ambitions with a playfully and tactically mature performance. Although the BTSV tried hard, they lacked the footballing resources to be able to pose serious problems to their arch-rivals. In addition, Eintracht had to play outnumbered from the 57th minute onwards after a yellow-red card against captain Jannis Nikolaou.
The clashes between the rival fan groups that had been feared in the run-up to the encounter did not materialize. Supporters of both clubs used pyrotechnics to ensure a late kick-off and two interruptions before and during the game.
“Fans” set off pyrotechnics and caused a late kick-off
The game started around six minutes late because some ticket buyers in the fan blocks of 96 and BTSV were apparently not particularly familiar with the Gregorian calendar. In any case, they brought New Year’s Eve forward to November 5th and, by setting off pyrotechnics, they ensured that thick clouds of smoke drifted through the World Cup stadium on Maschsee. It was colorful, loud – and as dangerous as it was unnecessary.
Since the German Football Association (DFB) does not tolerate such behavior in stadiums, both clubs will certainly receive mail from Frankfurt am Main soon. And one thing is already certain: there will be no New Year’s greetings in the envelopes, despite the New Year’s Eve “spectacle” of the incorrigible “followers”.
Kunze ensures an early 96 lead
The dominance of 96 in the initial phase of the encounter was just as unsurprising as the fireworks that were prohibited by house rules. The promotion candidate immediately put the bottom team under pressure and was quickly rewarded for his stormy start. Kunze overcame BTSV goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann with a shot from the edge of the penalty area that didn’t look entirely unsustainable. Derrick Köhn, who was once again very busy, was happy about a scorer point.
The guests were quickly under pressure. But interim coach Marc Pfitzner’s team, which had changed five positions in the starting line-up compared to the 4-1 defeat against Fortuna Düsseldorf the previous week, was unable to pose any major problems for the “Reds” defense. While in possession of the ball, the Braunschweigers were once again searching in vain for clever solutions before half-time this season.
Halstenberg increases with a penalty
At least: The work against the ball was sensible until shortly before the break. But then defender Saulo Decarli lost his timing when he tackled Louis Schaub in his own penalty area. The Swiss brought the Austrian down, which displeased a man from Niederkassel: referee Sascha Stegemann awarded a penalty. Halstenberg stepped up and made it 2-0.
The national player’s goal caused frustration among some Eintracht “supporters” who had saved a few Bengalos and now threw them onto the lawn. Stegemann had to briefly interrupt the game.
BTSV captain Nikolaou sees yellow-red
Shortly after the restart, the game had to be interrupted again because fireworks were shot onto the lawn from the Braunschweig block. The pyromaniacs between the peaceful Eintracht supporters really did the “Lions” no favors. In the first few minutes after the break, Pfitzner’s team made a hard-working and somewhat more determined impression.
After the 120-second break, the delicate BTSV glory was over. 96 took the scepter back and had all the trump cards in his hand at the latest after the yellow-red card against Nikolaou, whose working day ended early due to repeated foul play.
Instead of going into administration mode, the home team pushed for the final decision. Schaub (62nd) and Havard Nielsen (78th) narrowly failed to make it 3-0. There were no significant shots on the other side, so Braunschweig was left without a single opportunity to score in the derby – a declaration of sporting bankruptcy.
