PVV and VVD want more serious criminals in Vught: room for eight cells

An old building on the grounds of the Vught PI must be renovated so that there is room for eight cells for the most serious criminals. The renovation costs 30 million euros. “More places are needed for criminal leaders,” VVD and PVV write in a plan they have submitted. “The best place is Vught.”

After all, that is where the EBI (Extra Secure Institution) is located, where criminal leaders such as Ridouan Taghi and Willem Holleeder are detained. “Vught has gained specific experience with the security of criminal leaders.”

In addition, several buildings are vacant on the grounds of the PI Vught. The PVV and VVD have the TEBI (Temporary Extra Secure Facility) in mind. It was opened in 1993 after several criminals escaped from various prisons in the Netherlands. There were 33 cells in the TEBI.

“This building can be made almost EBI-worthy with a renovation and there can be at least eight cells,” the two political parties said Thursday in a proposal they submitted during a budget discussion of the Ministry of Justice and Security

Outgoing minister Franc Weerwind is not in favor of the plan. Residents of Vught were concerned for a long time about the serious criminals who passed schools and sports parks during transport. However, in January a new road was opened, meaning prisoners no longer have to go straight through the village. Because the route runs through a protected nature reserve, the road will in principle be there for a maximum of 10 years.
