The members of GroenLinks may vote in a referendum in the coming weeks about the plan to form a single faction in the Senate after the elections of 2023. The members of the PvdA face the same choice during their party congress on 11 June.

In recent weeks, the party board of the Social Democrats has considered a voting recommendation and is now positive: ‘If it is up to us, we will combine the power, ideas and visions of social and green politics in the Senate.’

The board emphasizes that it does not see this as an ‘irreversible step’ towards a total merger. ‘The PvdA elects its own senators who are accountable to our members for political choices. We will also further explore together after the conference which future forms of cooperation we find desirable.’

Political leader Attje Kuiken joined the party board on Friday. ‘I am in favor of a next step to form a left bloc. Reducing inequality, increasing livelihoods and building a bright future for our children. We do this more strongly together than alone and that is why we are looking for opportunities to join progressive forces.’
