Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to crack down on his opponents within Russia even harder. He has discussed additional measures with his Security Council to “avert and neutralize internal security threats,” Russia’s TASS news agency reported.
The tightening comes in the sixth week of the bloody Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine. The war is being sold in Russia as a “special military operation” and peacekeeping mission. Although polls would show that a large majority of Russians support Putin’s approach, there is also resistance. However, that is being nipped in the bud.
Last month, Putin issued a strong warning to Russian “traitors”. According to him, the West wants to use it as a so-called fifth column to destroy Russia.
