Putin compares Russia’s fate to JK Rowling’s: “The West is trying to cancel us” | News

Vladimir Putin and JK Rowling, two personalities who – albeit for very different reasons – can count themselves among the most famous individuals on earth. Yet it is difficult to reconcile the two, although Russian President Putin changed that today.

In a televised online meeting with people from Russia’s cultural sector, Putin compared the boycott of Russian art to the fate befell JK Rowling.

“A campaign is also underway against Russian composers, including Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff,” the president said. “The West is trying to cancel a thousand-year-old culture. This also happened to JK Rowling, because she disagreed with the demands related to gender rights.”
Rowling was criticized in 2020 for being transphobic on Twitter.

Putin also compared “cancel culture” to the book burnings by the Nazis in the 1930s.

JK Rowling has yet to comment on Putin’s comparison.
