Pure Energie has stopped developing the N34 wind farm between Westenesch and Erm. The company informed the municipality of Emmen this today. The developer indicates that changed market conditions have led to that decision.
This is the second time that plans for a wind farm at this location have come to a standstill. In 2016, the municipality of Emmen designated three areas where wind farms were allowed. In addition to the location along the N34, these were the Pottendijk in Emmer-Compascuum and the Zwartenbergerweg near Barger-Compascuum.
Things quickly went wrong on the N34. The conversations between Pure Energie and residents (who are allowed to benefit from the installation of turbines) came to nothing. At the time, Pure Energie wanted to install higher turbines, against the wishes of local residents. But according to the municipality’s rules, they may not exceed 150 meters with a maximum installation time of 16 years.
The developer found that conditions under which a profitable wind farm could not be realized. Then it was quiet around the wind farm for six years. The plans will be revived at the end of 2023. Electricity yields more and turbines are cheaper to produce.
But times have changed once again and the wind is literally being taken out of the sails again.
According to councilor Pascal Schrik, the municipality held discussions with Pure Energie in April. Placing five wind turbines near the N34 still seemed a feasible option at the time. According to Schrik, the maximum permitted height of the turbines, the high uncertainty on the energy market, connection costs and current energy prices all contribute to the decision to throw in the towel again.
The council of the municipality of Emmen is still considering how to proceed, according to Schrik.
