With a casual outfit on the flight to the inaugural visit to Washington, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) provided topics of conversation on the Internet. The 63-year-old came to the background discussion on the plane with the journalists traveling with him in jeans, a black T-shirt and a gray sweater. After pictures from the plane made the rounds on the Internet on Monday, the chancellor’s dress quickly became the subject of comments.
In tweets was from "Hardware store look" the speech, others drew comparisons with Til Schweiger. The chancellor’s own parliamentary group also took part in the discussion. On the official Twitter account of the SPD parliamentary group it was based on the pop classic "san francisco" by Scott McKenzie: "If you’re going to Washington DC Be sure to wear some sweater in the air."
The flight from Berlin to Washington took almost ten hours. The chancellor or minister and their delegation then sit at the front of the government machine. There is also a sleeping cabin for them. The journalists traveling with you have their seats further back. On such trips, German politicians have long had a different dress code than when they appear in public. The former chancellors Helmut Kohl (CDU) and Helmut Schmidt (SPD) liked to come to the press in casual clothes on such occasions – even if they often still wore a tie. (dpa)
