Pulled back hair, the risks for the hair

LThe alert comes from the website Madame Figarothe feminine side of the historic French newspaper: the chignon that is so fashionable, very tight, is one of the hair styles that causes the most damage to the hair. Although it is well known that tying your hair too tightly “stresses” your hair, high and tight hairstyling still remains very popular (and comfortable) daily solutions. This is also demonstrated by the video tutorial posted by Sofia Richie to copy her sleek bun: she almost scored nine hundred million views only on TikTok.

Cannes 2022: up-do hairstyles to copy

Pulled up hair, is it better to avoid it?

We are not talking about just any hairstyle but rather the one that is becoming popular among celebs and social media, namely the sleek bun, a very tight chignonwhich Hailey Bieber likes so much and of Sofia Richie. In particular, the latter published a tutorial on her TikTok profile on how to create a perfect minimal and very tight hair look.

Nothing wrong except that the sleek bun is avery tight hairstyle and fixed with abundant coats of gel to create the wet effect. Perfect to show off for a special occasion once in a while, but dangerous for your hair if you choose it every day.

The risks of tying your hair up every day

Rolling them up on themselves, wrapping them to form a bun, tying them tightly, applying generous coats of gel are all gestures that they stress the hair and scalp. For this reason, as the French newspaper specifies, there are many hairdressers who recommend reserving it once, but not every day.

In fact, the hair needs to be left loose so it can “breathe” and move naturally. When you start tying them too often and with too tight elastics, the stems weaken. In the case of the sleek bun, the twist is double: not just the hair is very tight, but is subsequently rolled up on itself. These movements they create a lot of tension both on the roots and lengths, with stress on the scalp, especially if it is already naturally sensitive.

An even more serious mistake? Create the sleek bun on wet hair, just as Lionel Ritchie’s daughter recommends. Wet hair is much softer and more elastic but tends to stretch, weakening the structure and making it fall out more easily.

Traction alopecia, the risk of hair being pulled too tightly

This type of hair loss is called traction alopecia and dancers and air hostesses in particular suffer from it, two professional categories forced to constantly have their hair tied up. Traction alopecia occurs when the hair undergoes aexcessive tension it causes and inflammation of the hair folliclesboth the breaking of thethe keratin present in the hair fiber, thus causing the lengths themselves to break.

A problem that also occurs when doing very tight braids: due to traction, the roots are overstimulated, with repercussions on the hair follicles, facilitating hair loss.

To avoid these problems you should not tie your hair every day and for the same reason they should avoid too stiff and narrow elastics: scrunchies are better, more delicate because they are made of fabric. Finally, never apply too much gel every day: used abundantly for the sleek bun, it weighs down the scalp, preventing it from “breathing”, facilitating dryness and dandruff.
