The sovereignist president charges against the current “state of repression” and accuses those of Aragonès of only seeking charges
Jordi Sànchez says goodbye with a call for internal unity to fight for pro-independence hegemony
Policy Paradoxes: Carles Puigdemont launches one of his most intense speeches at the time of his farewell. Dismissal from a position but not from authority because in barely 20 minutes, the ‘ex-president’ has launched an unequivocal combative message: neither talking about pactist or complacent views regarding the State, nor talking about buying the ERC strategy (which has defined as “qui dia passa anys empeny”, that is, complacent) but it is time to continue denouncing what he has described as a frontal attack by a State that according to Puigdemont is legally and morally corrupt, that works with the media and the courts to reduce the Catalan language and consider Catalans as third-class citizens.
Puigdemont has put the 900 delegates of the Junts congress in his pocket from minute one thanks to an infallible tactic: attack Esquerra and charge against any approach to the Government, any Government. He has chosen the Republican Gabriel Ruflán, who dared to affirm that it is not necessary to go so much to Waterloo (where Puigdemont has his residence). “What is not normal is having to visit someone in Waterloo, what is normal and decent is to visit them so that they do not feel aloneso that you feel well accompanied”, he cried out, achieving the first of several ovations.
From there, the entire speech has been a combative hammer against a “state of repression that has not stopped accelerating since this unfortunate speech by the king on October 3, in which he gave the green light to repression.” And he has described all Spanish governments as liars because “they will always consider us second-class or third-class citizens” and sick of “political and moral corruption.” He has given as an example espionage, Catalan and non-compliance with investments in Catalonia compared to what is invested in Madrid. “Collons, it’s ok!” has been blurted out. Delegates have risen to their feet on numerous occasions.
Attack on ERC for thinking only about his charges
All to give a single and unequivocal message to the new leadership of the party: not to mention taking steps back to get closer to Esquerra, because ERC is according to Puigdemont – who has not mentioned them at any time – the party that seeks a “false normality” or “reconciliation, pacification”. Moreover, he has accused the Republicans of “prioritize the well-being of their cadres” when this, he assures, has catastrophic consequences for the citizens” for not recognizing “the principle of reality”.
Govern yes, but “deploy” independence
The speech had a clear and unique objective: to ask the new leadership to maintain the objective of “deploying” the declaration of independence of October 27, 2017 despite what it has recognized as a context of “confusion, resignation, discouragement”. To this end, he has asked that Junts -which is the enemy to beat, as he has assured- be recognizable as a force that, whether in the government or the opposition, remains “serenely committed” to culminate independence. The how and when and with what levers has not been part of the discourse.
As EL PERIÓDICO reported in January, Puigdemont decided to leave the presidency of Junts to focus on his role as leader of the Consell per la República. The ‘ex-president’ will continue to be linked to the party that he founded two years ago after leaving the PDECat.
Sànchez sets homework: strategic unity and “illusion”
The general secretary has also been fired, jordi sanchez, who leaves office after two years and after internal criticism. It has been a farewell with a direct criticism of the path of dialogue that ERC raises. “The time has come to say loud and clear: like this, no, this way, no; this is not dialogue, this is systematic, continuous, permanent humiliation,” she proclaimed. “In the current conditions, as we had warned, there is no possibility of dialogue,” he added, referring to espionage and the lack of investment, among other issues, to define the State as an entity that seeks to put an end to independence.
“Enough looking for external excuses”
Sànchez has asked for a reflection on how Junts has to have the force of government but also “make possible the set of mobilizations that will make the option of independence close again”. With the aim of “recovering the illusion” of independence, to also lead the institutions. For this reason, he has affirmed that the party must seek independence hegemony. And also making it clear that “the institutional task cannot be abandoned”, in a message against voices critical of participation in the Government. “Enough of looking for external excuses because we cannot expect anything good from the State, let us be capable of assuming the responsibility that we all have and the people in charge of the institutions: our actions can change trends“. And addressing the rest of the pro-independence parties and entities, he stated: “Let us have a historical look, let us be generous with ourselves, let us go back to work to seek the strategic unity that we do not have today“. “Either we get ahead together or they will hang us separately”, he has settled, with a message also of “desire for unity” in Junts. Joking, he has claimed to always believe he is right and has compared the party’s executive to jail because ” he binds you to his way of doing things”. Sànchez was fired with long applause and the support of Puigdemont and the rest of the current management.

Junts celebrates its second congress with a change of address and transmitting an image of unity around the new leadership shared between the ‘exconseller’ Jordi Turull and the President of the Parliament, Laura Borras. The conclave gathers in Argelers some 900 delegates who represent the six thousand militants of the formation. All the militants vote between this Friday and Saturday telematically to the direction that Turull and Borràs have agreed. The only unknown is to know the percentage of support received by each of the members of the new leadership, which will be elected without opposition. The congress has paid tribute to the ex-independence prisoners and those displaced abroad.
Behind closed doors, those responsible for the four proposals -organisational, political, sectoral, municipal- have shown their willingness to negotiate the four texts and have firmly defended principles such as the defense of Catalan, criticizing the Spanish Government. The congress was attended by representatives of ERC, Demòcrates, Òmnium and the ANC, among others.
