The Public Prosecution Service has concluded on appeal that it only sees evidence for the involvement of Sanil B. in the death of Carlo Heuvelman (27) in Mallorca. Heuvelman was kicked and beaten there in 2021 by a group of men from Hilversum that he later died in the hospital. B. is the only one who still has to go to prison as far as the justice system is concerned: ten years in total, the Public Prosecution Service said on Wednesday. The Hilversummers were already convicted in April for Heuvelman’s death, but both the Public Prosecution Service and the convicts themselves wanted an appeal.
The Public Prosecution Service found that the “truth-finding process is not yet complete”. During the first trial, the judge decided that the group was collectively responsible for Heuvelman’s death. Little was known about the individual actions of the perpetrators, partly because they remained silent about this. This joint responsibility also means that members of the group who may have been involved to a lesser extent in Heuvelman’s death have received relatively heavy sentences.
Of the convicted, only Sanil B. is currently in custody for manslaughter. The other convicts, including the men who received unconditional prison sentences, await the judge’s decision in freedom. As far as the Public Prosecution Service is concerned, they do not have to go back to prison. The justice department, following the court, sees insufficient evidence for the involvement of Hein B. and Mees T. in Heuvelman’s death in 2021. They have already served their prison sentences in pre-trial detention.
The ruling is expected in mid-March.
