Public Prosecution Service appeals against the release of rapper Lil Kleine

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) is appealing the release of Jorik Scholten, better known as rapper Lil Kleine. A spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service in Amsterdam confirmed this on Thursday NRC† Scholten has been suspected of attempted serious assault since Sunday, but heard on Wednesday that he may await the criminal investigation into him in freedom.

Scholten was arrested on Sunday after a violent incident between him and his fiancée Jaimie Vaes. Shortly before that, gossip blogger Yvonne Coldeweijer had published surveillance camera images that would show Scholten dragging his fiancée out of a car by her hair and trying to slam the car door while Vaes is probably in the door.

On Wednesday, the Public Prosecution Service wanted Scholten’s detention to be extended, but the examining magistrate decided otherwise. The Public Prosecution Service has now ‘approved’ against that decision. The Amsterdam Court of Appeal must now decide whether the release was justified. It is not yet known when the court will issue a ruling.

The rapper was sentenced on Friday to 120 hours of community service and a two-week suspended prison sentence for assaulting a man in 2019. Last year he was arrested on the Spanish island of Ibiza, after his fiancée ran to a hotel reception covered in blood. The Spanish judge decided to conditionally dismiss the case against Scholten.

The album was released in January Ibiza Stories, on which the rapper discusses the mistreatment of Vaes on the Spanish island. His music has been removed from playlists of music streaming service Spotify after Sunday’s incident. Radio station FunX no longer plays its music either. Lil Kleine broke through six years ago with the hit ‘Drink & Drugs’. Between 2018 and 2020 he was a jury member on the television program The Voice of Holland
