Psychiatric Hospital OLV opens new intensive care unit
The intensive care unit has four beds and is part of the unit for short-term intensive psychiatric treatment. 24 patients who are going through an acute crisis can go there. In the past, seclusion was the only solution in such a case, now there is 1 on 1 contact with a care provider, and contact with the environment remains. In addition, family members can also spend the night here.
Johan Logie, department coordinator: “Intensive care in a psychiatric setting means proximity. Giving closeness, but still giving people the freedom and autonomy to be themselves, but within the vicinity of 1 care provider. If you need the necessary proximity, you will be provided with a helper. During the day this could be anyone from the team, a nurse, a therapist, a social worker. You can also be offered moments of rest, so that we can provide help without the closedness that was sometimes necessary in the past.”
