Rethink the ex-professional

PSV Eindhoven have found a new head coach for the coming season. What first “Eindhoven’s Dagblad” reported, the club officially confirmed in the evening: Former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy takes over for Roger Schmidt. The 55-year-old announced his departure at the end of the season after two years and will most likely switch to Benfica Lisbon.
Van Nistelrooy has been PSV’s second-in-command since June 2021, having previously worked for the Eredivisie club’s U18s and as an assistant with the Dutch national team. The 45-year-old has signed a contract until June 2025 and will be joined in his first head coaching stint in a premier league as an assistant by Fred Rutten, who is currently a supervisor at NEC Nijmegen and was himself head coach at Eindhoven from 2009 to 2012.
“I’ve been working towards this moment for years,” said van Nistelrooy. “I’m proud and confident that I’m ready to take on a leadership role at my club. (…) Several things came together in the past month. The appointment of Marcel Brands as managing director of PSV and the conversation with him gave me the final impetus to take this step with full conviction. PSV is going in a new direction this summer and I want to be a part of it. Discussions with the entire management board and the supervisory board have strengthened my image of unity and the ambition to achieve something special with PSV in the long term. I’m ready to lead the club as head coach.”
Recently it was said that van Nistelrooy was rejecting the vacant post with the PSV professionals because he did not see himself ready for this step. Instead, he wants to remain at Jong PSV, although he has left the door open a crack. “The dream and the urge to be a first-team coach are mapped out,” said van Nistelrooy.
