If PSV settles with AS Monaco in the third preliminary round of the Champions League, a diptych with Rangers FC or Union Sint-Gillis awaits in the play-offs. That’s what the draw showed.
In case of a success against AS Monaco, PSV first awaits an away game against Rangers FC, the team led by Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
The Scottish record champion reached the final of the Europa League last season, in which Eintracht Frankfurt was too strong after a penalty shootout. In the league, Rangers finished second behind Celtic. Halfway through last season, Van Bronckhorst succeeded Steven Gerrard at the Scottish top club.
The first meeting between AS Monaco and PSV is Tuesday evening in the principality. The return is in Eindhoven in a week.
The games in the play-offs are on August 16/17 (home games) and August 23/24 (returns). The exact dates will be announced at a later stage. Teams that survive the play-offs are guaranteed a performance in the group stage of the Champions League.
If PSV is eliminated in the third preliminary round or in the possible play-offs, the club will move on to the group stage of the Europa League.
Ajax sure of participation in the main tournament
The team from Eindhoven finished second in the Eredivisie last season. National champions Ajax is assured of participation in the group stage in the Champions League, for which the draw will take place on 25 August.
The main tournament kicks off on September 6. Due to the World Cup in Qatar, the last matches in the first round will be played on November 1 and 2. The final of the 31st Champions League season will be in Istanbul on June 10, 2023.
