PSV loses for the first time this season in the Netherlands and is out of the cup

PSV has lost a match in a Dutch competition for the first time in 365 days. A year after the defeat against FC Emmen, Feyenoord was now too strong in the cup tournament. A goal from Quinten Timber was enough for the Rotterdam team to eliminate the Eindhoven team. Afterwards it will still be a penalty that was not given.

Winning in De Kuip for a third time in one season. After equaling the record of 17 consecutive victories in the competition, PSV could once again achieve something unique this season. Feyenoord was the opponent in the eighth final of the cup tournament.

The match went back and forth. Guus Til hit the crossbar with a header and at the other end Joël Drommel had to save a number of times. That didn’t work on a shot from Quinten Timber after more than half an hour of football. The midfielder was outlawed and scored from the turn, 1-0.

Missing in midfield
PSV missed two central midfielders in Rotterdam. Joey Veerman was still injured and Ismael Saibari is active in the Africa Cup. This was reflected on the field as PSV missed a ‘number 8’. That role was now filled by Malik Tillman, who normally plays on the left or as an attacking midfielder.

But the American played very awkwardly and was replaced at halftime by Mauro Júnior, a left back. Another left back, Patrick van Aanholt, also entered the field halfway through the midfield. Bosz was clearly not satisfied with the state of affairs with his team.

Penalty
After the double substitution, PSV quickly became dangerous in the second half. Within ten minutes they had a chance to equalize, but several PSV players were unable to get the ball over the line. Furthermore, what the Eindhoven team showed in an attacking sense was very fragile.

After an hour of play, Peter Bosz brought his next trump card with Noa Lang. The attacker was threatening and seemed to be tapped in the box in the 70th minute. But both the referee and the VAR remarkably ruled that there was no reason for a penalty. A yellow card for Mats Wieffer would also have meant red.

First defeat in a year
PSV was unable to launch a real final offensive, meaning they were unable to reverse the deficit. After 365 days, it loses another match in a Dutch competition. A year ago, Emmen was too strong in the competition. Now a defeat against Feyenoord means the end of the cup campaign.

PSV can recover on Saturday. Almere City will then visit Eindhoven in the competition.
