PSV lost 1-2 to AZ on Saturday at home. It is the second week in a row that the Eindhoven players lose an Eredivisie match. The goals were scored by Armando Obispo, Bruno Martins Indi and Jesper Karlsson.
The match against AZ was the first for PSV since coach Roger Schmidt announced this week that he was leaving at the end of the season. The German trainer started the game with a surprise in the line-up, by replacing goalkeeper Joël Drommel for Yvon Mvogo. According to Schmidt, Drommel had proved “unreliable” in recent weeks.
The Eindhoven team did take the lead after defender Armando Obispo headed in from a corner from Cody Gakpo. Even before halftime, AZ equalized with a goal from Bruno Martins Indi. After the break, the Alkmaarders took the lead when keeper Mvogo misjudged a high ball and AZ attacker Jesper Karlsson had the ball for tapping.
With a win, PSV could have taken over the lead from Ajax. The team from Amsterdam, who won against PSV last week, will play against Heracles Almelo on Sunday and can increase the gap with the Eindhoven team to five points if they win.
