PSV completed the transfer of Jarrad Branthwaite on Sunday. The defender will be hired from Everton next season and will join the selection after the weekend.
PSV already reported on Saturday that the talks with Everton were in the final phase. With the arrival of Branthwaite, the people of Eindhoven have a bit more options in the back. Olivier Boscagli is unable to play at least until the winter break due to a serious knee injury.
“That is why we wanted to add a left-footed central defender with quality on a rental basis to the selection,” says director of football affairs John de Jong. “Jarrad meets all those requirements. He is a player with a lot of height and he is physically strong. He has constructive qualities and is good at one-on-one situations.”
Branthwaite was acquired by Everton from Carlisle United in January 2020. The England youth international played on a rental basis for Blackburn Rovers for six months and made eight official appearances for Everton last season, where he is still under contract until mid-2025. Due to a lack of perspective on playing time, he was allowed to be rented out again.
“It is an advantage that Marcel (general director Marcel Brands, ed.) Knows Jarrad well from his period at Everton. That is why we knew it was possible to rent him for a season,” says De Jong.
Branthwaite is looking forward to his period in Eindhoven. “PSV gave me the feeling from the first moment that they really wanted me. I seize the opportunity to play for the trophies and fight European duels with both hands. It’s time to let my qualities on the field and help the team move forward.”
