PSV also convincingly won the difficult away match against AZ. In Alkmaar, the flawless leader had no problem with the number four of the Eredivisie. Within fifteen minutes it was already 3-0 for the Eindhoven team. In the end, PSV was kind to the Alkmaar club with a 4-0 win.
There was never a difficult match. PSV grabbed the Alkmaar sub-topper by the throat from the start. After just over fifteen minutes of football, the Eindhoven team already had the three points in the bag.
The 0-1 was a gift from goalkeeper Hobie Verhulst. The keeper reacted too late to a back pass and therefore fouled Malik Tillman. Luuk de Jong scored from the penalty spot to give PSV the lead. The team of coach Peter Bosz then rumbled on. The 0-2 was a wonderful attack that was completed by Ismael Saibari. Five minutes later, PSV closed the match early. A quick break came from Sergino Dest who hit the ball in the long corner.
PSV remained hungry and could, and perhaps should, have scored many more. AZ could be happy that it was only 0-3 at halftime.
Convincing PSV
Ten minutes after the break it was still 0-4. De Jong headed his second goal of the match behind the AZ goalie. It was his 120th goal for PSV in the Eredivisie and he thus passed number two Coen Dillen. Only Willy van der Kuijlen scored more goals in the PSV shirt (308).
The convincing victory over ‘competitor’ AZ once again underlines that this PSV is almost impossible to beat. It enters the winter break with a ten-point lead over number two Feyenoord and has not dropped a point yet this season. Things must be very strange if Bosz’s team wants to lose that lead.
Record hunting
After the winter break, PSV has a home match against Excelsior. If PSV also manages to win that game, it will equal a record from 1987. Then PSV also won the first seventeen games under the leadership of Guus Hiddink.
PSV ends the year on Thursday with a cup match against FC Twente. A place in the eighth finals is at stake in Eindhoven.
