The three-time Danish world handball player Mikkel Hansen is out for the rest of the season after suffering a pulmonary embolism.
As his club Paris St. Germain announced on Tuesday, the problems arose immediately after returning from knee surgery in Denmark the previous week.
Hansen will have to be treated with blood coagulation drugs in the next four to six months, which will make “contact sports at the highest level” impossible.
Hansen is considered one of the best players in the world on the left backcourt, he won the Olympics with Denmark (2016), was world champion twice (2019 and 2021) and European champion once (2012).
With PSG, Hansen (34) has won eight French championships and four cups since 2012. In the summer he is due to return to his homeland to join Aalborg Handbold.
