The Qatari owners of French soccer champions Paris Saint-Germain have taken a minority stake in Portuguese club Sporting Braga.
This was announced by the club from northern Portugal on Monday. Qatar Sports Investments fund has notified Sporting Braga that it has acquired the shares of minority shareholder Olivedesportos SGPS.
Numbers were not mentioned. According to Portuguese media reports, the sovereign wealth fund from Qatar now holds 21.67 percent of the capital. The club is still the majority shareholder, stressed Sporting Braga.
Behind the traditional top trio formed by Benfica Lisbon, FC Porto and Sporting Lisbon, the club has been considered the fourth force in Portuguese football for several years. Since 2018, the Red and Whites have always occupied one of the top four places in the Primeira Liga at the end of the season.
The northern Portuguese may have won the Cup three times (most recently in 2021) and the League Cup twice (most recently in 2020), but Braga have so far been unable to claim their first league title in club history.
