Protester refuses handshake from Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau: “You have ruined the entire country” | Abroad

During one public incident, an angry protester refused to shake hands with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and even called him a “piece of shit.” He criticized the handling of issues such as carbon taxes and the housing crisis. In a video of the incident, Trudeau is seen waving confidently at his supporters, who are lining up to meet him.

The 51-year-old prime minister first shakes someone else’s hand and then waves to a child in a stroller. Then he tries to shake hands with yet another member of the audience. This person refuses and expresses his dissatisfaction by saying, “I’m not shaking your hand, man, you’re a fucking piece of shit.” Trudeau seems surprised and asks why. The man responds by criticizing issues such as affordable housing and carbon taxes, questioning where the money goes. “You have ruined the whole country!” he exclaims.

Trudeau patiently explains that these are environmental taxes and that the money goes back to families, including the man’s. A discussion ensues about the destination of the money, with the man referring to Ukraine and accusing the prime minister of “propaganda”. Before walking away, Trudeau says: “You listened to Putin, didn’t you?” He suggests that the man may have been influenced by Russian disinformation. Eventually the man walks away and the Prime Minister returns to his vehicle.

Homelessness crisis

There were quick reactions to the incident on social media. Someone posted on X: “He seems to miss everything when he disagrees, huh!” Another wrote: “The use of the Putin card is so lame from the Prime Minister.” Meanwhile, Canada is struggling with growing homelessness, with tens of thousands of people losing their homes. The average home price in Canada was about C$750,000 (€518,493) in August, a 360 percent increase from 2000, when the average was C$163,000 (€112,685.81).

Home prices have risen especially sharply in cities like Toronto and Vancouver, which are now among the most unaffordable places to live in the world. Politicians have promised to tackle this problem, but it remains a challenge. According to experts, drastic measures are needed to meet the growing demand for affordable housing.
