Protest flags and handkerchiefs have to go in Deurne, otherwise the municipality will do it

Inverted Dutch flags and red handkerchiefs that have been hung in protest on, among other things, lampposts in the municipality of Deurne, must be removed by Sunday at the latest. If this has not yet happened, the municipality will do so. Mayor Greet Buter will let you know.

The flags and handkerchiefs have been hung in protest against the government’s nitrogen policy. Buter understands the farmers’ frustration and that they want to express it, but does not accept this method.

“For the municipality and for many residents, the Dutch flag is a symbol of unity and democracy. Hanging it upside down can be experienced as insulting. That is why it does not belong in public space. Flags that come loose can also lead to dangerous traffic situations,” explains Buter.

Formally, this action even required permission from the municipality. Buter also says that she would like to talk to people about this promotion.
