Proposed a new tunnel that would connect Vallès with Barcelona and Baix Llobregat

  • Fem Vallès proposes a third underground tunnel of 2.5 km that would pass through the coast of the Catalan capital

The Asociation Fem Valles puts on the table the proposal to build a third underground tunnel to improve the connectivity of the railway network and the accessibility of Vallès, Barcelona and Baix Llobregat.

From a regional point of view, they want to build a tunnel Rodalies passing through the coast of Barcelonathus connecting the three vallesan capitals Terrassa, Sabadell and Granollers– would remain connected with a regional perspective.

He aim of the new infrastructure, as pointed out by Fem Valles, is to decongest the lines. In addition, they denounce that Barcelona only has two railway tunnels to cross the city and “they are at the limit of their capacity, thus paralyzing the possibility of increase frequencies or the establishment of new services”.

Connect the Vallès: 2.5 km along the coast

The association’s proposal is to draw a route along the coast of 2.5 kilometers of the new tunnel that would be located between the station France and Morrot’s in sants-montjuic: “It is a much lower cost compared to other railway projects such as the one planned in the ‘Metropolitan Territorial Plan of Barcelona‘”. In this sense, they ensure that the new permetry tunnel will generate an “important, new and central” Rodalies station at the Moll de la Fusta.

However, the proposal is of great importance for the Metropolitan regionsince it would allow the establishment of two circular lines, serving the Vallès, Baix Llobregat and Barcelonès. A first link would operate as a long and circular R7, from the UAB to Barcelona through Castellbisbal and Cornella and from Barcelona to the UAB through Montcada and Reixac.

The second link, larger than the first, would circulate along the tracks that it uses today FGC for goods (previously the track gauge would be changed to standard), along the R8 corridor, along the R2 tracks and the proposed new tunnel. It should be remembered that neither of these two services can be performed due to the tunnel saturation.

According to Fem Vallesthe new tunnel would not require a TBM and could be built by open sky screens, since it would circulate at a shallow depth. Even so, they highlight that the most complex point of the work would be the passage under the coastal ring road and line 4 of the metro.
