Proponent of direct affiliation with Russia loses first round of South Ossetian election

The president of the conflict region of South Ossetia in the Caucasus, Anatoli Bibilov, has lost the first round of the unrecognized presidential elections. Bibilov, who recently announced a referendum on immediate accession to Russia, received 33.5 percent of the vote, trailing challenger Alan Gagloev 36.9 percent.
