The short-lived uprising of the Wagner group stunned almost everyone in Russia. Putin’s deal with Wagner boss Prigozhin is therefore controversial. Kremlin mouthpieces supposed to defend the deal are appalled that Prigozhin and his mercenaries appear to be escaping punishment.

Propagandists are simply expected to support the Russian leader unconditionally, but Russian state television also sounded harsh criticism.
Presenter Vladimir Solovyov, for example, expressed shock and dismay at his country’s appalling state of preparedness that allowed Prigozhin’s troops to roll their tanks through Russia unhindered. The infamous talk show host seemed caught between hammer and anvil. He had to justify the Russian president’s decision to release Prigojzin and his Wagner fighters despite previously advocating for the death penalty for minor offences.
There is nothing more terrifying in the world than civil war
During the broadcast, Putin’s infinite wisdom was initially praised for quickly ending the uprising. “There is nothing more terrifying in the world than civil war,” Margarita Simonyan, hardliner and editor-in-chief of Russia Today, said on Sunday night’s show.
Simonyan expressed her relief at the deal that quickly quelled the riot. According to her, Putin’s agreement with Wagner was the right choice. “There are currently many discussions: how is this possible? They opened a criminal case and then let them go! This is a mockery of legal norms,” she explained of the debate that is currently raging. But Simonyan ruled that legal precepts are not set in stone like the “commandments of Christ or the stone tablets of Moses”. “There are exceptional circumstances where laws no longer function and then they are set aside,” she said. “It was a choice between the terrible and the horrible… There is nothing more terrifying than a civil war and preventing it is much more important than a violation of some legal regulations.”
“Our leaders have shown strength and wisdom. Most importantly, the regime showed strength without bloodlust,” Solovyov added.

But MP and former general Andrei Gurulyov was too stunned by Prigozhin’s actions to go along with the propaganda story. “I firmly believe that in time of war traitors must be eliminated. Whatever fairy tales they tell, a bullet in the forehead is the only salvation for Prigozhin. There is no other option!” stated Gurulyov, who also stated that he did not understand why the Russian authorities had not seen this coming.
“This war affects the whole country. Unfortunately, we have to prepare for everything. I don’t understand at all why this could even happen. Where are the authorities that should have known this in advance? It should have been prevented, it should have been stopped when the Wagner mercenaries were on their way. Treason cannot be forgiven under any circumstances,” concluded the former general.
